NBC rejects Pro-Life Superbowl Ad
From OneNewsNow...
NBC television has rejected a pro-life advertisement which Catholicvote.org bought for a slot in the Super Bowl because the ad contains a pro-life message. The 30-second ad features ultrasound pictures from a baby in its mother’s womb. There is nothing either graphic or political and the word abortion is not even used. In fact, no words are spoken, only graphics that appear on-screen. Yet, the message is extremely powerful.

Obama Snubs Vet Ball
Since its inception in 1953, every new president has attended The Salute to Heroes Inaugural Ball – until now.
The ball was created for President Dwight Eisenhower's inauguration to honor recipients of the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military award. The event is sponsored by the American Legion and co-sponsored by 13 other veteran's service organizations, including the Paralyzed Veterans of America and the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
And while 48 of the nation's 99 living recipients of the Medal of Honor attended the event, reports the Cleveland Leader and various self-attested attendees of the ball, newly sworn-in President Barack Obama became the first president in 56 years to skip out on the ceremony.

WB News plugging referendum and school board candidates
I find it strikingly "interesting" that the WB News would publish two articles in the same week, both connecting to either the upcoming referendum (see previous post of 15 Minutes with Mike Weston) and now with Carl Knepel, who is currently running for a seat on the West Bend School Board.
The article cites:
The West Bend School Board had the debate team on the chopping block among other budget cuts. Knepel put his debating skills to use. Decked out in a suit, Knepel addressed the board in public session four times.
The board members told Knepel they were impressed with his persistence.

F.I.R.E. appeals to Obama to uphold 1st Amendment rights for students
In an open letter to Obama on the occasion of his inauguration this week, The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education or FIRE, asked for his help in its battle "against college and university speech codes that are infringing on the rights of millions of our nation's college students."
"Millions of American students are being taught that colleges have the power to censor and punish speech that the Bill of Rights protects," said FIRE's president, Greg Lukianoff.
The group's letter stated, in part: "Failing to educate an entire generation about our constitutional ideals of liberty – and, still worse, actually teaching students that they have a duty to censor opinions with which they disagree – means that it will not be long before these illiberal attitudes result in severe consequences for our Republic."
The organization cited 10 federal court decisions "unequivocally striking down campus speech codes on First Amendment grounds from 1989 to 2008" but said the number of "unconstitutional restrictions on campus speech" actually has risen.
The group's 2009 survey of speech codes in academia, for example, found 77 percent of public colleges and universities maintain speech codes that violate the U.S. Constitution.
Worse yet are the actual examples of punishment for violating the codes, the organization said.

Stem cell research begins.... No coincidence to new presidency
In a move the Food and Drug Administration denies has anything to do with the new presidency, the federal agency granted permission this week to begin the country's first embryonic stem cell treatments on human subjects.
The FDA approved an application from Geron Corporation, based in Menlo Park, Calif., to inject stem cells derived from human embryos into 10 people paralyzed from the chest down by spinal cord injuries.

TMJ4 reporting inept/Brookfield Perkins is a dirty diner
Specifically, I have a problem with Steve Wexler, General Manager of TMJ4, Brenda Serio, Programming, and Courtny Gerrish, "Dirty Dining" reporter.
...
Here's the story:
Shortly after TMJ4 aired a "Dirty Dining" segment about the Perkins in Brookfield on December 11, 2008, I noticed that the report had been posted on TMJ4's "Dirty Dining" web page and then removed.
I was able to capture the story via Google's cache.
...
BROOKFIELD - A family restaurant not keeping food cold enough. Perkins on Barker Road and Bluemound.
An employee was cracking eggs and then touching customer's food, all without changing gloves. A cross contamination risk. When we stopped by the manager wasn't talking. "You don't want to comment?" "Not really."
Inspectors had issues with food temperature. Meatloaf and sausage were at 45 degrees. Rice was kept at 47 degrees. The safe cold temperature is 41. Also, inspectors found a cooler as warm as 47 degrees, and Hash browns were sitting out at room temperature.
Children's drink cups used as scoops, sitting in food. Perkins was ordered to use a scoop with a handle, so employees don't put their hands in the food. Also, there were open bags of flour stored on the floor. Dry goods must be sealed in a container and kept off the floor.
The manager did tell us Perkins was cleaning things up.
...
What's so puzzling is that the story was posted on the "Dirty Dining" web page and then removed.
Although the TMJ4 staff is aware that the Perkins segment is no longer available via their site, nothing has been done to rectify that.

WI Legislators ask UW Hospital/Clinics to reconsider Abortion Mill
Madison . . . Today
Senator Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend) along with twenty-nine fellow legislators released their letter requesting the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics to halt any plans to sponsor a midterm abortion facility at the Madison Surgery Center.
“I am ashamed that the University would even consider being a part of a 2nd trimester abortion clinic,” said Senator Grothman. “Other hospitals around the country are taking pride in providing lifesaving care to these babies. I am finding revulsion among some normally pro-choice people at doing abortions so far into the pregnancy. ”
The University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics have stated that they will discuss their midterm abortion plans at their February board meeting.
“I’ve always thought the University of Wisconsin Hospital was something the entire state could support,” said Samantha Kerkman. (R-Randall) “To begin doing abortions, something that very few medical facilities in the state will consider, will forever be a black mark on this institution.”
The University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics spokeswoman has stated that these midterm abortions will be performed from 13 weeks up until 22 weeks of gestational life.
“The idea that the University of Wisconsin-Madison would sponsor a midterm abortion clinic is reprehensible,” said Representative Joan Ballweg (R-Markesan). “I implore them to reconsider their plan. Babies in their second trimester of life have fingerprints, suck their thumb, and are able to feel pain.”

Mark Belling vs. WB School Board on Referendum
DN: Like many other American school districts, ours is going through some difficult economic times, and obviously that will have a huge impact on any future referendum. I know the School Board delayed a planned referendum for right now. What’s going to happen if the school district doesn’t get that infusion of cash?
MW: We have to look at things like more trailers, larger class sizes, maybe different shifts, a second shift. We’d have to do something outside of the box to make up for it. Everybody wants the small class sizes because it’s shown that it’s better to educate the kids with smaller class sizes. So we want to maintain that, but I guess that’s what we’d have to do if we start getting more students, you’d have to have larger class sizes. We’ve got two trailers now, and we might end up having to put more trailers up.
DN: What are the pressing issues facing the schools right now, things that need to be addressed immediately?
MW: There is the ongoing building maintenance issues. There’s nothing that is an immediate danger or anything like that. When we did that $119 million referendum, the public said, “How did the buildings get like this?” And it was because we were always pulling money out of the maintenance budget. Now we’ve committed $1 million a year to start maintaining the buildings again.MARK BELLING put a plug in for the West Bend Referendum, too....
"But none of this is deterring the greedsters who want to keep taxing you. They’ve been holding “house parties” in West Bend this month to plot support for another try at a school tax referendum. The last one got smoked by the voters but school boards believe that if at first they don’t succeed in raising your taxes, they should try, try, try, try again. In the real world people and businesses are showing enormous restraint as they try to survive this mess. In the fantasy world of government, they’re holding parties trying to tax those same people.
Can these clowns EVER give up? 2009 is NOT the year to be building schools or to be asking individuals, some of whom have been devastated by the housing and stock market collapses, to pay more in taxes. "

Historical moment as Roberts botches swearing in...
First, Roberts seemed to hesitate in the first part of the oath, prompting Obama to start in with "I Barack Hussein Obama," as Roberts continued on with the rest, causing a verbal traffic jam.
Then, Roberts changed the wording of the oath, misplacing the word "faithfully", and obliged a bemused Obama to incorrectly repeat after him. In short, those 35 words that should have gone without a hitch, will forever go down in history as the way not to swear in a president.
Perhaps the lack of a teleprompter is the issue???

Elkhorn School District implements homosexual indoctrination
11-th grade English teacher Sarah Arnold says she was inspired to create the curriculum, entitled "Exposing Hidden Homophobia," when she heard an "anti-gay undertone" in students' conversations, which included making fun of "anything that defied gender stereotype," according to an article printed in the pro-homosexual publication by the Southern Poverty Law Center "Teaching Tolerance."
"Some people would say we don't have a wide demographic variety here," Arnold said of the mostly white Elkhorn Area High School. "It's more accurate to say that we have demographics that aren't acknowledged."
The program Arnold developed included "in-depth exploration of depictions" of homosexuality in mass media; several homosexual-themed films, documentaries, books and novels; internet research on "the nature of homophobia"; and a "homophobia questionnaire" coupled with a "heterosexual questionnaire" designed to take questions "commonly asked of homosexuals and ask them of heterosexuals" - e.g., "When did you decide to become heterosexual?'"

WB School Board candidate Knepel lends interview at Boots & Sabers
Carl Knepel is running for one of the two open West Bend School Board seats. Read his interview here. Read the posted comments, as well. I, for one, do not support him and will not be voting for him in spring.
Curtsy to Boots & Sabers:
Carl Knepel is a candidate for the West Bend School Board. I recently sent him a list of questions to get to know him better. Based on his responses, I will not be supporting him, but judge for yourself.
Here is a portion of one of the question/answer sections:
Do you support the school referenda as written? Why?
As a current student, member of the community, and board of education candidate, I am for the passing of the current school referenda. The staff of the district, and more importantly, the children of our community, deserve at the very least, adequate facilities. The district staff work hard for their students and their student’s families. For me, who would be their employer if elected, not to support the action of improving the current facility situation, would do nothing less then make me an irresponsible employer, a irresponsible board member, and a irresponsible person.

Campbell's soup labels support gay marriage?
Many people aren’t aware that when their school participates in Campbell’s “Labels for Education” program they are supporting a company that has openly come out in support of homosexual marriage, and it has no intentions of stopping that support.
“Labels for Education” provides equipment for schools in exchange for proofs of purchase from the family of Campbell’s brands.
Many of the schools that participate don’t know that Campbell’s supports the homosexual publication The Advocate with advertising. The Advocate is a leading promoter of same-sex marriage.
AFA asked Campbell’s to be neutral in the culture war. Campbell’s refused and said it would continue to support The Advocate. The Media Daily News reported that a Campbell spokesman was quoted as saying: “Our plans for the Swanson brand [a division of Campbell’s] include additional placements in The Advocate." To show their commitment to same-sex marriage, Campbell's sought out and featured two "married" lesbians and their son in one of the ads.

Say "no" to anti-gun Eric HOLDER for AG
The incoming President's choice for U.S. Attorney General, EricHolder, is an anti-gun extremist who has assailed gun owners since his days in the Bill Clinton administration. Holder, who served as Deputy Attorney General from 1997-2001, supports a 3-day waiting period for handgun purchases, one-gun-a-month rationing, licensing and registration of all gunowners, mandatory so-called smart gun technology, a lifetime gun ban for certain juvenile offenses and regulating gun shows out of existence. As Janet Reno's top deputy, Eric Holder was the go-to guy on gun control issues. In a 1999 statement, Holder told members of Congress not to cave in to "the special interest that value the cold hard steel of guns more than the lives of children, neighbors and police officers," and urged them to pass legislation that would have destroyed the gun show industry.
Gun Owners of America members flooded the Congress with postcards and e-mails and stopped Holder's gun control plan. In 2000, Holder was instrumental in the Clinton Administration's effort to strong arm firearms manufacturers into voluntarily accepting regulations that had stalled in the Congress. In a brazen legislation-by-extortion plot, the federal government filed suit against gun makers, but offered to drop the suit if the companies would bow to the administration's demands. Again, GOA and its members took the lead in opposing Holder and the Clinton Administration and slowed down implementation of the agreement until it completely went away when Clinton left office. One company went along with the deal but after intense pressure from gun owners, no others joined the unholy alliance. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, in an op-ed in the Washington Post, Holder pushed for more gun control and greater restrictions on gun shows, even though the terrorists were armed with box cutters that could be purchased at any hardware store. Just last year, Holder joined Janet Reno and 11 other former Justice Department officials in an amicus brief before the Supreme Court arguing in favor of the gun ban in Washington D.C. The Holder/Reno brief also took the position that the Second Amendment protects a collective government right, not an individual right. GOA and its members have defeated Eric Holder and his agenda in the past, and we need to do it again. The Holder nomination is subject to Senate confirmation in a vote which is set to occur at any time. Gun Owners of America has asked all members of the U.S. Senate to reject this anti-Second Amendment activist. Now we're urging gun owners across the country to contact their own Senators and insist that they vote "NO" on Eric Holder.

Froedtert/St.Joe's donation considered at West Bend SB work session
Though no decision has yet been made concerning the acceptance of this donation, for all intents and purposes the board gave the appearance of moving forward and most likely accepting the gift.
Bruce Koenig questioned whether or not it would be opened up to the community, or if it would be strictly for the youth. No final answer was committed to regarding this query, but Supt. Pat Herdrich stated that it is possible the community would be allowed usage, citing Slinger's management of their youth fitness center and the positive effect on the community.
Equipment is already being aquired through a PEP grant, but a location must be in the works in order to receive the $130,000 worth of exercise equipment.
The total cost for the youth fitness project is an estimated $680,000.
The cost would be offset by:
1. $250,00 from Froedtert/St. Joe's.
2. $130,000 PEP grant
There was discussion of a possible additional private community donation of up to $300,000, but no commitment has been made in this regard.
Warren Schmidt indicated that there was $226,000 in the maintenance fund, so if the donors do not come through with the $300,000, this will clinch the remaining funding for the project.
John Duwell is concerned that if the board turns down this offer from Froedtert/St. Joe's, we will "risk losing the gift."
The CFAC-2 committee will frame up the plans, to include architectural drawings, for the next school board work session, to present to the full school board at the following regular meeting to determine action.
The new plan involves a building of 6,000 square feet, according to Warren Schmidt. Operating costs will need to include the usual heating, lighting, cleaning and general maintenance. Naming rights would belong to Froedtert/St. Joe's.

West Bend School Board - Jackson property condemnation and your tax $$$
Supt. Pat Herdrich gave a prediscussion disclaimer speech, stating that she did not want the public to be "misinformed" and think they were making plans behind the taxpayers backs. She further said that these were "simply informational sessions" to prepare the Board for future negotiations.
The discussion progressed with Q&A between the Board members and Atty. Marcuvitz, assuming the referendum goes through as proposed. Unfortunately, there was never any mention made of a PLAN B. No thoughts, ideas, discussion on Jackson school issues if the referendum FAILS.
The basic gist of the procedure is this:
1. The eminent domain process would take place under statute 32.06. The full explanation can be read here and states that two requirements must be met: a) Public purpose and b) Just compensation (private property cannot be taken unless just compensation is made.)
2. This statute requires the district to make an initial offer to the land owner (who is a developer in this case, though the property location was never disclosed) by obtaining an appraisal (that the District pays for) from a qualified source.
3. The property owner then obtains an appraisal of their own choosing (which the District also pays for).
4. The property owner and the District then enter into negotiations using the figures of the appraisals to come to an agreement on Fair Market Value.
5. Should this procedure fail, they go to formal eminent domain proceedings by petitioning the court for condemnation.
6. The petition falls on the County Condemnaation Committee, who makes a decision on the price.
7. If no reconciliation is achieved, it goes to a jury trial, during which time the District can move forward or reject the project.
John Duwell questioned the right of the property owner to reject the eminent domain/condemnation process. The Kelo vs. New London case was brought up, citing that the property own would most likely be unsuccessful in putting a stop to it.
The entire project can take from 6 to 8 months, possibly up to 1 year, to acquire the property. Mediation is generally required by a judge, who usually appoints a mediator of his choice.
Legal fees could run as much as $10,000 to the District.
Atty. Marcuvitz maintained that appraisals should be sought from someone who is not an employee of the district and should never be the negotiator.
He further cautioned that if the District would negotiate privately (not using eminent domain process) with the land owner, the land owner has six months to file a claim for additional compensation. Furthermore, lis pendens could also be pursued.
