George Washington's 101 Rules of Civility

We could learn a few things...

George Washington and Martha were not "Wedding Crashers" but they did have a rule book that they lived by. When George Washington was fourteen-years-old he was given a list of "110 rules"--rules to live by, Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior. They were originally thought to have been written in the year 1595 by French Jesuit priests. Washington wrote out each one and committed it to memory. These rules are timeless in their application and invaluable in their content.

Here are a few:

Rule 12: Shake not the head, feet, or legs; roll not the eyes; lift not one eyebrow higher than the other; wry not thy mouth; and bedew no man's face with your spittle by approaching too near him when you speak.

Rule 23: When you see a crime punished, you may be inwardly pleased, but always show pity to the suffering offender.

Rule 42: Let thy ceremonies in courtesy be proper to the dignity of his place with who thou converses, for it is absurd to act the same with a clown and a prince.
