A sweet story with a beautiful ending - the choice of LIFE

What a great way to begin Sunday morning... This Mom chose LIFE.

This story begins in The Milwaukee Journal in 1988. An article by reporter Tim Norris introduced us to Vickie Garcia, who got pregnant at 15 and was struggling to raise her toddler, Nadia, with help from extended family.

"I am happy, but I'm not living happily ever after," Vickie is quoted as saying then. "I wonder how I'm going to get money for Pampers and other things like that."

"I just have to take it one day at a time," the south side girl said.

Vickie's mother, Margarita Garcia-Guerrero, called this newspaper the other day to update the story.

She said Nadia has graduated from college, a feat that readers in 1988 might not have predicted under the sketchy circumstances.

"I wanted to let you know this was a very good turnout," the proud grandmother said, "and that things can actually work out in real life and not only in the movies."

She mentions the movies because the original article was inspired by a film that was getting some buzz at the time. "For Keeps" starred Molly Ringwald as a pregnant teenager who rises to the challenge in a feel-good Hollywood way.

The article tells how the blood drained from Margarita's face when Vickie told her she was pregnant. "How could you do that?" scolded Margarita, who had not been a teen mom herself.
