College students from across the state will be able to join their University of Wisconsin-Madison peers in a competition that gives them 100 hours to create something of value from salvaged materials.
The third annual 100-Hour Wiscontrepreneur Challenge begins Feb. 18 and runs through Feb. 22. Students are given vouchers to use at UW-Madison's Surplus With a Purpose (SWAP) shop and, by the end of the contest, must post images of their creation on a public Web site.
Past creations have ranged from a space heater safety alarm, to a carved-wood light fixture and a hand-cranking portable power generator. Four winners receive cash awards ranging from $100 to $300.
This year, students from any two-year or four-year Wisconsin institution may enter the contest, which is run by the UW-Madison Office of Corporate Relations and sponsored by a grant from the Kauffman Foundation.
